The Stadium was designed with sustainability in mind. Therefore the structure was split into 2 parts; the concrete frame, which provided 25,000 seats will remains as the “Legacy” after the Games; and the “temporary” steelwork frame, which provided the remaining 55,000 seats was removed after the event.

Byrne Bros. was awarded the £40 million contract by Sir Robert McAlpine/Team Stadium in Spring 2008 for the construction of the in-situ concrete works for the sub & superstructure commencing June 2008.

Prior to commencement of work on site, Byrne Bros. reviewed the original structural design and proposed practicable alternatives to ensure quality and programme. For example, utilising precast beam and hollowcore slabs in the North and East stands to overcome poor ground conditions, the extensive use of on-site precasting to provide high quality finishes where required, and the use of prefabricated reinforcement to meet programme and tolerance requirements.
